Community and Environment: An Alternate Approach for Removing a Big Leaf Maple
Project Background: A Failing Big Leaf Maple
Six months ago, a large Big Leaf Maple in a community member's yard experienced a significant failure. Half of the tree failed at the base, leaving the remaining structure compromised. The client, concerned for their safety as the tree leaned towards their house, decided that removal was the best course of action.
Upon inspection, I discovered included bark at the base of the tree had caused internal decay. Included bark is a sign of weak attachment between tree limbs, which can increase the risk of further failures. Given these conditions, the decision to remove the tree was justified to ensure the safety of the client and their property.
The Removal Process: Safety and Skill in Action
On the day of removal, my focus was on ensuring the procedure was safe and efficient. Using professional techniques, I carefully cut the tree down to the point of the previous failure. This approach minimized any risk to the surrounding area and structures.
One of the techniques I employed was making a coronet cut at the site of removal. A coronet cut imitates the jagged appearance of a natural break. This method not only leaves the site looking more natural but also creates potential habitats for wildlife. Dead wood, especially from native species like the Big Leaf Maple, can provide critical resources for a variety of animals and insects.
The Importance of Ecological Stewardship
At Natural Arboriculture, we are committed to environmental care. Every tree we work with is treated with respect and consideration for its ecological role. Trees are vital components of our urban and natural landscapes, providing numerous benefits such as oxygen production, carbon sequestration, and habitat for wildlife.
In this project, the coronet cut serves as a reminder that even in removal, we can contribute positively to the environment. By leaving a structure that supports wildlife, we maintain a balance between human needs and nature.
